This pristine region of Costa Rica is set between the lowlands and the foothills of the Talamanca mountain range and the Caribbean Sea. This area of Costa Rica covers 220 km of coastline, which extends from San Juan river to the Sixaola river along the border with Panama. The city of Limón is the capital of this province, which in turn has the most important port in the country, Puerto Limón.
In the northern sector, the main attractions include Tortuguero National Park and Barra del Colorado Wildlife Refuge, this area consists of a system of rivers, beaches and wetlands, particularly important for wildlife observation, these ecosystems are worldwide known as a prime destination for sea turtle observation, as a birdwatching hotspot and as an ideal place to observe frogs during the night tours.
In the other hand, the southern sector of the Caribbean region of Costa Rica exhibits a unique mix of beaches, rainforest, Afro-Caribbean and indigenous cultures, spectacular snorkeling and scuba diving along the coral reefs of Cahuita National Park and Gandoca Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge.
The southern Caribbean definitely has some of the most beautiful beaches in the country, Cocles, Punta Uva, Chiquita and Punta Mona are as beautiful as any of the beaches found in the Caribbean islands, postcard beaches!
Additionally, the southern Caribbean region is a major surfing destination during the wave season (December-March and July - August), while in the other months of the year, the Caribbean waters remain calm, becoming great for swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, fishing, stand-up paddling or kayaking.
